Mariah Carey’s popular 1994 Christmas hit is like no other

It’s that time of the year again. Whether you listen to the radio in your car, go grocery shopping, or even just walk the hallways of AT during passing periods, there comes that one day when Christmas music makes its annual comeback.

And, let’s face it, the one song that dominates almost every single radio station in the winter season is Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

The song is not only an iconic Christmas song, but also the best-selling Christmas single by a female artist, as well as overall one of the best-selling singles of all time. The success that the single brought Carey is the reason why many people went as far as calling her the Queen of Christmas.

If you know anything about music charts and streaming, you probably know that they are mostly dominated by new, popular releases. In December of 2019, the song has reached No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100, doing so 25 years after its release.

It also made Carey the first artist to have a No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 in four separate decades. Since then, the song has reached No. 1 two years in a row and has huge chances of doing it once again.

The fact that makes the song’s success even more astounding is that co-writing the song with Walter Afanasieff took Carey only 15 minutes. He credited the song’s success to its simplicity, which in his opinion was partially the reason why it’s so popular.

Adding to the already long list of achievements, in 2020, the song broke a Guinness record for the highest-charting holiday (Christmas/New Year) song on the Billboard US Hot 100 by a solo artist.

People seem to start coming back to the song earlier every year. This year’s statistics show that the song receives above-average popularity as early as late October

Carey herself started slowly promoting the song on Oct. 31 this year, which is another reason to anticipate the song’s third No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in a row. She does not waste a single second and plays into the song’s popularity by promoting it even more now that people seem to get excited about Christmas earlier than usual.

Of course, with bigger popularity comes bigger income and Carey can’t complain about her earnings from the hit song. With the music industry being so complex, it’s hard to pinpoint a specific amount of money, but it is believed that she makes at least $1 million every holiday season.

It’s an impressive number, especially considering the fact that it’s what she earns from one song while having a catalog of other music that also contributes to her earnings.

Maybe you’re the type of person who can’t stand listening to the song, or maybe you can’t wait to hear it every time Christmas is approaching. Either way, there’s no doubt that “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is an iconic holiday song that will forever be a part of the Christmas magic for many people.
